When To Plant Dahlia Bulbs in India
Dahlias are a cool-season crop in most of India. The usual planting window is October to November, giving flowers from December through February and often into March. In hill stations and cooler regions, plant after the last frost in spring instead. Avoid planting into peak summer heat — dahlias will sulk above roughly 32°C and the tubers can rot in hot, wet soil.
How To Grow Them

Light: Full sun. Five to six hours of direct morning sun with shade from harsh afternoon glare gives the strongest flowering.
Soil: Loose and free-draining, enriched with compost. Heavy, waterlogged soil is the single most common reason dahlia tubers fail.
Depth: Plant 4 to 6 inches deep with the eye, or growing point, facing upward. Space tubers about a foot apart.
Water: Keep the soil barely moist until shoots appear, then water whenever the top inch feels dry. Water at the base, not over the foliage.
Feeding: Switch to a low-nitrogen, high-potash feed once buds form. Too much nitrogen gives you leaves instead of flowers.
Support: Taller varieties benefit from a stake, as the flower heads get heavy.
After flowering: Let the foliage yellow and dry, then lift the tubers, dry them in shade and store them somewhere cool and airy until the next season.

This is completely normal and is exactly how bulbs are meant to travel; leaves and buds appear a few weeks after planting. Do dahlias come back every year? In cool regions the tubers survive in the ground and resprout. In hotter parts of India it is safer to lift and store them after the season.
