Description

African Violet (Saintpaulia) – Elegant Indoor Blooms

African Violet is a beloved indoor flowering plant known for its velvety, rounded leaves and clusters of vibrant blooms in shades of purple, pink, blue, or white. Compact and easy to grow, African Violets add a splash of color and life to windowsills, tabletops, and office desks all year round.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. East or north-facing windows are ideal, or use fluorescent grow lights if natural light is limited.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water from the bottom by placing the pot in a saucer of water for 20–30 minutes, or gently water the soil surface. Avoid getting water on the leaves to prevent spotting and rot.
  • Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity (50–60%). Place the pot on a tray of pebbles with water or use a room humidifier if the air is dry.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, light, and airy potting mix specifically formulated for African Violets. A mix with peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite is ideal.
  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 18–24°C (65–75°F). Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
  • Fertilizer: Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at half strength. Specialized African Violet fertilizers are also available.
  • Repotting: Repot once a year or when the plant outgrows its container. Remove dead leaves and faded flowers regularly to encourage new growth.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated from leaf cuttings placed in water or moist potting mix.

African Violets are non-toxic to pets and people, making them a safe and beautiful choice for any home or office. With the right care, these charming plants will reward you with continuous blooms and lush foliage.
