About This Plant
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Maple Acer palmatum, commonly known as Japanese maple or palmate maple, is one of the most graceful ornamental trees in the world. Native to Japan, Korea, China, eastern Mongolia, and southeast Russia, this deciduous tree has been cultivated for centuries by garden lovers and bonsai artists. Its small, deeply lobed palmate leaves emerge bright green in spring and transform through brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds in autumn — offering a spectacular year-round colour show. Whether planted in a garden bed, grown in a container on a balcony, or trained as a living bonsai, Acer palmatum is a tree of timeless beauty and endless versatility.

🌿 Care Instructions
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

☀️ Sunlight: Prefers morning sun with afternoon shade. Avoid harsh midday sun, especially in Indian summers, to prevent leaf scorch.
💧 Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply and regularly in summer; reduce in winter. Mulching around the base retains moisture and keeps roots cool.
🪴 Soil: Well-drained, slightly acidic, humus-rich soil. A mix of loam, compost, and coarse sand works well in containers. Target pH 5.5–6.5.
🌡️ Temperature: Thrives in -5°C to 27°C. In hot Indian summers, provide afternoon shade and water generously. Best in cooler regions — hill stations, highlands, and temperate zones.
🧪 Fertiliser: Slow-release balanced fertiliser in early spring. Avoid over-fertilising, which can reduce the intensity of autumn colour.
✂️ Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter to maintain shape. Remove dead wood. Responds beautifully to bonsai training.
❄️ Cold Resistance: Excellent cold hardiness. In extreme winters below -20°C, protect roots with mulch and use windbreaks.

📅 Seasonal Availability & Behaviour
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🌸 Spring (Feb – Apr):
Fresh green leaves emerge. Begin light fertilising after new growth appears. Good time for planting in cool-climate gardens.

☀️ Summer (May – Aug):
Lush green foliage. Maintain regular watering. Provide afternoon shade in hotter zones to prevent leaf scorch.

🍂 Autumn (Sep – Nov):
Leaves transform to brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds before dropping — the most spectacular display of the year. Reduce watering. Apply leaf compost around root zone.

❄️ Winter (Dec – Jan):
Plant goes dormant — bare branches. Do not fertilise. Mulch roots well. The graceful bare silhouette has its own ornamental beauty.

🛒 Best Time to Buy & Plant:
February to April or September to October — allows roots to establish before the next colour season.

🌍 Climate Zone Compatibility
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Cold Cities (thrives — summer max below 20°C):
Leh, Kargil, Tawang, Spiti, Lahaul — excellent growth and reliable autumn colour

Semi-Temperate Cities (grows well — summer max 20–28°C):
Shimla, Manali, Mussoorie, Ooty, Kodaikanal, Shillong, Munnar — good growth with afternoon shade in summer

Temperate Cities (best growth — summer max 25–30°C):
Nainital, Dharamsala, Srinagar, Aizawl — ideal cool summers and cold winters for strong autumn display

⚠️ Subtropical Cities (marginal — summer max 33–38°C):
Dehradun, Bangalore, Pune — plant survives with care but autumn colour may be reduced; afternoon shade essential

Tropical Cities (not suitable — summer max 35–40°C):
Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad — not recommended; extreme heat and lack of cold winters prevents proper dormancy

Frequently Asked Questions
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Q: Can I grow Maple Acer palmatum in Delhi or Mumbai?
A: It is not recommended. Japanese maple needs cool winters (below 10°C) for proper dormancy and autumn colour. In hot plains cities, the plant may survive but will rarely show its full seasonal beauty. Best suited to Nainital, Shimla, Manali, Ooty, Kodaikanal, Srinagar, and similar cool-climate locations.

Q: How long before it shows autumn colour?
A: Most young saplings show good autumn colour within 2–3 years of planting once established in the right cool-climate conditions.

Q: Does it lose its leaves?
A: Yes — Acer palmatum is deciduous. It drops its leaves in autumn after the colour display and stands bare through winter. The graceful bare branching is itself beautiful.

Q: Is it good for bonsai?
A: Absolutely. Acer palmatum has been used for bonsai in Japan for centuries. Its small leaves, elegant branching, and seasonal colour changes make it one of the finest bonsai subjects available.

Q: What soil does it need?
A: Slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.5), well-drained, humus-rich soil. Avoid heavy clay and alkaline soils. For containers, use a mix of loam, compost, and coarse sand.

Had ordered a Maple Acer Plamatum but decided to change it to a Japanese Black Pine instead after consulting with the supplier through WhatsApp. They made their concern known about the Maple not being suitable for Delhi and I requested for the change. They were kind enough to oblige and sent me an excellent and healthy Japanese Black Pine. The cost was the same so there were no hassles. They kept me updated through the delivery process and we’re cool enough to reply to me everytime I contacted them. Have already requested my family to order a couple of more plants from Plantshub for my home.
