About This Plant
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Red Maple Acer Palmatum Bloodgood is the most dramatic and sought-after Japanese maple cultivar available. Native to Japan, Korea, and China, it is celebrated worldwide for its intense dark purple-red to red-black foliage that holds its rich, deep colour consistently from spring all the way through late summer — unlike many red maples that fade to green in the heat. In autumn, the leaves ignite into a breathtaking display of fiery crimson and scarlet before they fall. Whether you want a centrepiece for your garden, a stunning bonsai, or a premium terrace tree, the Bloodgood delivers unmatched seasonal drama and timeless beauty.

🌿 Care Instructions
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
☀️ Sunlight: Morning sun with afternoon shade — at least 4–5 hours direct sun for best colour. In cooler climates, more sun deepens the red foliage colour.
💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply 2–3 times a week in summer; reduce in winter. Never let roots dry out completely — causes leaf scorch.
🟫 Soil: Well-drained, slightly acidic, humus-rich soil. Best mix: loam + compost + perlite. For containers, add broken terracotta at bottom. Target pH 5.5–6.5.
🌡️ Temperature: Thrives in 0–27°C. Afternoon shade essential in hot Indian summers to prevent colour fading. Best for cooler regions, hill stations, and temperate zones.
🧪 Fertiliser: Slow-release, low-nitrogen fertiliser in early spring. High nitrogen causes green growth that dulls the red colour.
✂️ Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter to maintain shape and remove dead or weak branches. Responds beautifully to bonsai-style shaping.
❄️ Cold Resistance: Highly cold-hardy. In extreme winters, mulch roots thickly and use windbreaks where needed.

📅 Seasonal Availability & Behaviour
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🌸 Spring (Feb – Apr):
Fresh purple-red leaves emerge. Most vibrant colour of the year. Begin light fertilising after new growth appears.
☀️ Summer (May – Aug):
Foliage holds deep red colour — the Bloodgood’s signature trait. Maintain regular watering. Provide afternoon shade in hotter zones.
🍂 Autumn (Sep – Nov):
Leaves transform to brilliant crimson and scarlet before dropping. Reduce watering. Apply leaf compost around root zone.
❄️ Winter (Dec – Jan):
Plant goes dormant — bare branches. Do not fertilise. Mulch roots well. This dormancy period strengthens spring colour.
🛒 Best Time to Buy & Plant:
February to April or September to October — allows roots to establish before the next colour season.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Q: Can I grow Red Maple Bloodgood in Delhi or Mumbai?
A: It is not recommended. This maple needs cool winters (below 10°C) for proper dormancy and vivid red colour. In hot plains cities, the plant may survive but colour will be significantly reduced. Best suited to Nainital, Shimla, Manali, Mussoorie, Ooty, Kodaikanal, Srinagar, and similar cool-climate locations.
Q: Why is it called Bloodgood?
A: The name comes from the Bloodgood Nursery in New York, which first popularised this cultivar. It refers to the deep blood-red colour of the foliage — the richest and most stable of all red maple varieties.
Q: Does it lose its leaves?
A: Yes — it is deciduous. It drops its leaves in autumn and stands bare through winter. The bare winter silhouette with graceful branching is itself ornamental.
Q: Is it good for bonsai?
A: Absolutely. The Bloodgood’s slow growth rate, compact internodes, and stunning leaf colour make it one of the most prized bonsai subjects. With patient training, it creates spectacular seasonal bonsai.
Q: What soil does it need?
A: Slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.5), well-drained, humus-rich soil. Avoid heavy clay and alkaline soils. For containers, use a mix of loam, compost, and perlite.

I got this in October 2024 leaves were dried out, since it was Fall i wasn’t worried i carefully repotted it with the original soil. Kept it outside during the winter, temperature went as low as -8.5C and now in April 2025 you can see what it looks like. Beautiful plant, can wait for it to grow.
