Description

CUT FLOWER

Lisianthus Dwarf White

Layered ruffled blooms in clean white on a compact 25–30 cm plant — the bridal favourite, and a three-week cut flower.

The Bridal Lisianthus

Eustoma grandiflorum in white is the form most used in wedding work, and it is easy to see why: the layered, softly ruffled petals read as a rose from a distance, but the flower is lighter, cleaner and far longer lasting in water.

This is the dwarf selection, holding at 25–30 cm, which makes it a pot and border plant. Buds spiral open slowly over days, and a single plant carries flowers for weeks through the cool season.

Bloom and Vase Life

Flowers are 5–7 cm across, pure white with a faint green throat, on strong short stems. Vase life runs two to three weeks — exceptional among garden flowers — which is exactly why florists reach for it.

Key Features

Clean white ruffled blooms with a faint green throat
Compact dwarf habit, 25–30 cm tall
Vase life of two to three weeks
A florist favourite for wedding work
Long flowering through the cool season
Ideal for pots, borders and window boxes

🌱 Recommended Potting Mix

A very open, soil-free mix — lisianthus rot at the crown in anything that stays wet.

Lisianthus
Potting Mix
40% Cocopeat

Holds moisture, keeps the mix light.

25% Vermicompost

Slow-release nutrients and microbes.

20% River Sand

Drainage channels; stops compaction.

15% Perlite

Aeration and fast drainage; holds 4x its weight in water.

Pro Tip: Days at 25°C with nights at 20°C already induce rosetting — the plant flattens into a rosette and never sends up a flowering stem. Keep it cool.

Growing and Care Guide

Simple essentials for healthy and balanced growth.

Sunlight
Full sun to light shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade works best in India.
Watering
Even moisture, watered at the base. Never wet the foliage.
Soil
Fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline, with sharp drainage at the crown.
Temperature
Grows between 10°C and 30°C. Best growth 15°C to 28°C. Nights above 12°C.
Fertilizer
Balanced feed fortnightly through budding and flowering.
Pruning
Deadhead regularly. Cut for the vase as the first bud on the stem opens.

Temperature Tolerance

What this plant enjoys, what it merely survives, and where it stops.

Ideal range
20°C day / 18°C night
At 20°C day and 18°C night, eustoma seedlings develop easily. This was the control condition in the ISHS seedling trial.
Active growth
22°C – 28°C
Warmer days lengthen the stems — 28/23°C elongated faster than 22/17°C — but the node count drops, so the extra length costs quality.

35°C
Safe but slowIdealActive growthHeat stress
❄️ Cold limits
USDA Zone 8–10
Winter survival
Lisianthus survives the winter temperatures of Zones 8 to 10. It is usually grown as an annual and flowers from summer until the first frost.
🌡️ Heat limits
25°C day / 20°C night
Rosetting
High temperature induces rosetting — the plant sits as a flat rosette and refuses to send up a flowering stem. This is the single biggest risk with lisianthus in a warm climate.
28°C day
Fewer nodes
Stems elongate faster but the number of nodes falls, so the flowering stem is longer and thinner rather than better.

Season by Season

Spring (Feb – Apr)
Peak flowering. Feed fortnightly and deadhead to keep buds coming.
Summer (May – Jun)
Heat halts flowering and causes rosetting. Shift pots to the coolest spot available.
Monsoon (Jul – Sep)
Botrytis risk is high. Keep leaves dry and air moving.
Autumn (Oct – Nov)
Ideal planting window as the heat breaks.
Winter (Dec – Jan)
Strong flowering in cool weather if nights stay above 12°C.

How to Plant

01. Pick a position with morning sun and afternoon shade.
02. Use a pot at least 20 cm across with free drainage.
03. Fill with the recommended free-draining mixture.
04. Set the crown level with the soil — burying it causes rot.
05. Water at the base, keeping foliage dry.
06. Begin fortnightly feeding as buds appear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is white harder to grow than the blue?

No — care is identical. The white simply shows water marks and botrytis damage more clearly.

The plant has gone flat and stopped growing.

Rosetting from heat above about 28°C. Move it somewhere cooler and it usually resumes.

How long will cut stems last?

Two to three weeks in clean water, changed every few days.

Can I grow it through an Indian summer?

Not in the plains. Treat it as a cool-season plant, from October through March.

The Florist’s White Flower

Ruffled white blooms that last three weeks cut, on a plant small enough for a window box.

Flowering time, bloom size, colour depth and plant height may vary depending on plant maturity, climate, sunlight, nutrition, soil and local growing conditions.
