Alocasia Hilo Beauty
Deep green leaves splashed with irregular cream camouflage — one of the most striking variegated aroids, and happiest in bright shade.
Camouflage in a Pot
Sold for years as Caladium praetermissum and now generally placed in Alocasia, Hilo Beauty is grown for one thing: the leaf. Each blade is deep matt green overlaid with irregular cream-to-pale-yellow blotches, and no two leaves carry the same pattern.
It is a clumping tropical aroid reaching 45–60 cm, growing from a tuber. In cool regions it dies back and rests over winter, then returns when warmth comes. Indoors in bright indirect light it holds foliage for much longer.
Leaf Pattern
The variegation is irregular and unpredictable — cream splashes scattered across deep green, with a matt rather than glossy finish. Pattern intensity improves in bright indirect light and washes out in deep shade. Leaves reach 20–30 cm on upright petioles.

Is it a Caladium or an Alocasia?
It was sold for years as Caladium praetermissum, but it is now generally treated as an Alocasia. Care is the same either way.
All the leaves died in December — is it dead?
Almost certainly not. It is a tuber and goes dormant in cool weather. Keep it barely moist above 15°C and it returns in spring.
Why is the variegation fading?
Too little light. Move it somewhere brighter, but still out of direct midday sun.
Can I keep it indoors year round?
Yes, in bright indirect light. Indoors it often holds its leaves through winter instead of dying back.
