Description

Euphorbia tirucalli, also known by various common names such as Firestick Plant, Red Pencil Cactus, Pencil Tree, Milk Bush, and Aveloz, is a succulent shrub or small tree belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family.

Appearance
  • Stems: Slender, cylindrical, pencil-like branches, typically 7 millimeters (0.28 inches) thick.
  • Color: The stems are usually a yellowish-green. However, in cooler months or with sufficient direct sunlight, they can develop stunning, vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, resembling fiery sticks, which is why it’s also known as “Sticks on Fire” or “Firestick Plant”. The intensity of the color is directly linked to sun exposure.
  • Growth Habit: This plant has a branching, upright habit, forming a thicket or shrub-like form. It can reach up to 9 meters (30 feet) in height outdoors in ideal conditions, and up to 1.2 to 2.4 meters (4 to 8 feet) tall and wide when mature.
  • Leaves: Small, oval leaves, 1 to 2.5 centimeters (0.39 to 0.98 inches) long and 3 to 4 millimeters (0.12 to 0.16 inches) wide, appear on new growth but quickly fall off, leaving the colorful stems as the primary visual feature.
  • Flowers: The flowers are tiny, inconspicuous, and yellowish, typically appearing in clusters at the ends of the branches. They are not considered a significant ornamental feature.
    Other characteristics
    • Drought-Tolerant: The succulent stems enable the plant to store water and thrive in dry conditions.
    • Drought Tolerance: Once established, this plant needs very little water and can survive extended periods of dryness.
    • Hardiness: The Firestick Plant  prefers warm climates. It’s sensitive to frost.
    • Low Maintenance: This plant is generally easy to care for, requiring minimal watering and fertilization.
    • Toxicity: It’s important to note that the milky white sap produced by this plant is highly toxic and can cause severe skin and eye irritation, potentially leading to temporary blindness. Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling or pruning this plant, say health authorities. Ingestion can cause nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal distress. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
    In summary
The Firestick Plant (Euphorbia tirucalli ‘Sticks on Fire’) is a striking and relatively low-maintenance succulent known for its unique appearance and fiery coloration. It is well-suited for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and container gardening in warm climates or as a houseplant in cooler regions. However, its toxic sap requires careful handling to avoid skin and eye irritation.
