Black Diamond Lavender Lace Crape Myrtle
Near-black foliage carrying lavender blooms all summer — the darkest-leaved crape myrtle bred, and compact enough for a large pot.
Dark Leaves, Lavender Flowers
Lagerstroemia Black Diamond ‘Lavender Lace’ belongs to a breeding line developed specifically for foliage colour. The leaves emerge and stay a deep burgundy-black through the whole growing season, and against that darkness the soft lavender flower panicles read almost luminous.
It flowers from early summer through to autumn, holds a tidy 2–3 m frame without much pruning, and drops its leaves in winter to show smooth mottled bark. Unlike older crape myrtles it needs no hard annual cutting back to flower well.
Foliage and Flower
The near-black leaf colour is stable — it does not revert to green in summer heat the way many purple-leaved shrubs do. Flower panicles are 15–20 cm long in a clear soft lavender, produced in successive flushes from June until the first cold nights.
Key Features
🌱 Recommended Potting Mix
Light on garden soil, strong on compost — heavy soil chokes crape myrtle roots.
Potting Mix
What is Garden Soil?
Clean, fertile and loose topsoil collected from a healthy garden or cultivation area.
- Loose and easy to crumble
- Free from stones and waste
- Not extremely hard or sticky
- Able to drain excess water
- Loamy soil is preferred
If your garden soil is sticky or clay-heavy, increase the river sand or perlite share and reduce the cocopeat by the same amount.
Holds moisture, keeps the mix light.
Slow-release nutrients and microbes.
Drainage channels; stops compaction.
Slow phosphorus for roots and blooms.
Pro Tip: Give it the sunniest spot you have. Shade means fewer flowers and duller leaf colour.

Temperature Tolerance
What this plant enjoys, what it merely survives, and where it stops.
Figures from PlantsHub’s own experience growing this tree in India — the 25–32°C summer daytime range and the 8–9°C winter minimum are ours, not a paper’s. No research or extension source publishes a flowering temperature for Lagerstroemia indica at all; the US ones give only winter survival figures, which say nothing about whether it will bloom here. That it keeps flowering through extreme heat when watered, and that blooms fade in 4–7 days when heat meets dry soil, are from NC State Extension and UGA Extension C944. Light-frost note from Top Tropicals; the hot-humid-summer requirement from Useful Tropical Plants.

How to Plant
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the leaves stay black in Indian heat?
Yes. Colour stability is exactly what this line was bred for — it does not turn green in summer the way older purple-leaf varieties do.
Does it need cold winters to flower?
It flowers better after a proper dormant rest, so hill and north Indian gardens get the best show. It still flowers in warmer zones, just a little less heavily.
Can I grow it in a pot?
Yes — a 45 cm or larger pot suits its compact frame. Keep it in full sun and water deeply.
When should I prune?
Late winter, and only lightly. Hard topping ruins the natural shape and is unnecessary with this variety.
The Darkest Leaves in the Garden
Lavender flowers all summer against near-black foliage, on a tree small enough for a terrace.
Leaf colour intensity, flowering time and plant size may vary depending on plant maturity, climate, sunlight, nutrition, soil and local growing conditions.
