About This Plant
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) is one of the most rewarding evergreen climbers you can grow in India. Its glossy dark-green leaves stay handsome all year, and from late spring the plant disappears under hundreds of small white flowers shaped like five-bladed pinwheels. The scent is the real reason people plant it: sweet, clean and jasmine-like, it stays modest through the day and then pours out after sunset, filling a balcony or courtyard on warm evenings. It twines willingly up a trellis, railing or wire, but is just as happy trailing from a hanging basket, covering a bank as groundcover, or being clipped into a low fragrant hedge.

Key Benefits
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

  • 🌙 Evening fragrance — strongest exactly when you are outdoors
  • 🍃 Evergreen — keeps its glossy foliage through the year, bronzing attractively in cold
  • 🧗 Versatile — climber, groundcover, hanging basket or clipped hedge
  • 🌡️ Unusually wide climate range for a fragrant climber — hills to coastal plains
  • ✅ Low-maintenance and long-lived once established; few pest problems

🌿 Care Instructions
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

☀️ Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. At least 4–6 hours of direct sun gives the heaviest flowering; in very hot plains, light afternoon shade keeps foliage from scorching.
💧 Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist through spring and summer, allowing the top inch to dry between waterings. Reduce clearly in winter. Established plants tolerate short dry spells.
🟫 Soil: Any well-drained garden soil enriched with compost. For pots, use loam + compost + a handful of perlite or coarse sand. Avoid waterlogging.
🌡️ Temperature: Minimum -5°C, maximum 42°C. Comfortable across hill stations, subtropical plains and coastal regions.
🧪 Fertiliser: A balanced feed once in early spring and again after the main flush. Avoid heavy nitrogen — it produces leaves at the cost of flowers.
✂️ Pruning: Trim right after flowering to shape and to encourage dense growth. It takes hard pruning well.

Frequently Asked Questions
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Is it the same as the jasmine used for garlands?
No. Star Jasmine is Trachelospermum, a different plant from Jasminum sambac (mogra). It is grown for its climbing habit and evening scent rather than for picking.

Will it grow on a balcony?
Yes. Give it a 10–12 inch pot and something to twine around, and it will flower happily.

Does it need support?
To climb, yes — a trellis, wire or railing. Without support it spreads as attractive groundcover instead.

Why are my leaves turning bronze in winter?
That is a normal cold response, not a problem. Colour returns as temperatures rise.
